Elżbieta Terlikowska, a famous Wrocław painter, stage designer and costume designer, has joined the circle of artists that work with the Food Art Gallery. Her works – both paintings and costumes – have won many prestigious awards in Poland and abroad. The new cycle of artist’s works, “Con motivo”, has been available at the Food Art Gallery since early February.
Elżbieta Terlikowska, known among friends as Lalka, is certainly one of the most original figures in the Wrocław art world. She is famous mostly as a set designer and costume designer. During her collaboration with a number of Polish and foreign theatres (including those in Strasbourg, Berlin, Rome and Istanbul), she has completed over a hundred projects, costumes and set designs. However, theatre is not her only fascination. Painting has been her passion since high school. She does not like to limit her imagination, and her creativity cannot be clearly assigned to any specific artistic trend. Terlikowska’s unique style may be noticed in the exceptional attention to detail and the dark and mysterious atmosphere created by her paintings. In her works, she often depicts female characters decorated with many ornaments and knick-knacks found at a flea market. The result are intriguing and multilayered collages.
When creating her theatrical or painting projects, Terlikowska is satisfied only with perfection. Therefore, it is not surprising that the artist has won numerous awards. In 2014, she received the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, a prestigious award granted by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for outstanding contributions in the field of culture. She has also been appreciated locally, receiving the City of Wrocław Award for the lifetime achievement. She has also won recognition at the international level. Her costume to the drama “The Old Lady Sits Waiting” has been awarded the prestigious Prague Quadrennial award. The rank of the award in the theatre milieu may be compared to that of Academy Awards in the film industry. She has also been conferred the Journalist Award for the most interesting exhibition of the year in Hannover. However, the artist does not maintain an accurate inventory of her awards or even exhibitions. She claims this is not really important.
